October 16th 2006: The RS-12 has been redesigned to include an
Aperiodic Port. The effect of this is to increase the transparency in the low midrange and
tighten the bass. The rolloff of the bass frequencies (6dB per octave for minimum phase distortion)
has been designed to match the Acoustic Image Bass EQ curve. When the AI bass is increased or
decreased, it matches the contour of the RS-12 so that there are no frequencies that are boosted
higher than others, with no bump, humps or dips in the curve. This gives the seven string
player the opportunity to adjust the 7th string fundamental frequencies to his or her liking
without getting boomy notes. Un-EQ'ed the RS-12 has the Redstone signature sound. With EQ, the
artist can choose the level of darkness or brightness he or she prefers. The RS-12 retains the
dual cone speaker, an OEM version of the Eminence Beta 12LTA that extends the high frequency
response to 8 kHz for flat response, and usable to 10kHz.
I believe the RS-12 to be the most balanced 12 inch speaker cabinet available for the jazz
guitarist. The weight of the cabinet is only 25.5 lbs, and is 10.5" x 14.5" x 16.5". The
introductory price of the RS-12 remains at $440 (with stackable corners) and $425 (w/o corners).
A bit on the Aperiodic Port: This is a special port mounted in the center of the back with sound
absorbing material. There is some sound coming out of the back port, but not enough to enhance
frequencies through standing wave reflections that lead to increased feedback on certain notes.
The Aperiodic Port makes the speaker "think" it is operating inside a much larger cavity and
produces a lower Qtc (system Q). A lower Qtc is correlated with users reporting "tighter and
cleaner bass" (as opposed to "muddy") , and a more "transparent" sound throughout the cabinet's
range.
